Drying with superheated steam

Did you know that over 100 years ago, the concept of using superheated steam for drying was introduced? Despite its many benefits, steam dryers haven’t received the attention they deserve.
In short, to generate superheated steam, you must heat the steam beyond its vaporization point, making it &#8220;dry.&#8221; This dry steam wants to be wet, therefore it will absorb the moisture from the wet product in the dryer. It acts both as a heat source and a drying medium, evaporating water from the product and producing excess steam. Once the product separates from the steam, the steam recirculates in dhe dryer, reheats to stay superheated, and the process is repeated.
Our Pressurized Superheated Steam Dryer (ExergyPSSD®), invented by Claes Münter, founder of the company, at Chalmers University in Gothenburg in the late 1970s, uses superheated steam in a closed, pressurized system.
While some industries worry about the high temperatures involved in superheated steam, our ExergyPSSD® offers a drying time of just 5-10 seconds, a residence time significantly shorter than in a traditional hot-air dryer, delivering uniform dryness up to 99.9% of dry solids.
The benefits of Superheated steam
Unlike traditional hot air dryers, which often cause uneven drying, poor product quality, nutrient degradation, and oxidation, the ExergyPSSD® improves product quality. For instance, in DDGS drying, our pressurized Superheated Steam Dryer increase the by-pass protein value by protecting protein, increasing gelatinization of starch, improving taste, and achieving 100% sterilization of the DDGS. All of the above leads to improved milk production and weight gain in livestock. In addition to healthier animals, the dryer reduce VOCs like methane and ammonia. The ExergyPSSD® excels in various applications, including biomass, pulp and paper, ethanol, and sludge, offering benefits that traditional dryers cannot match.

Create high-value animal feed with Exergy PSSD®. This advanced dryer processes various sources like DDGS from ethanol production, Brewer’s spent grains, and waste from juice production. 
ExergyPSSD® (Exergy Pressurized Superheated Steam Dryer) transforms protein structures, improving digestibility without causing denaturation. As a result, this process allows 50% more protein to bypass the rumen, leading to increased milk production and weight gain.

The ExergyPSSD® operates as a closed, pressurized drying system where the wet product is exposed to superheated steam, which serves as a transport gas for the product in the dryer. To begin with, The drying heat transfers from the medium through superheater surfaces to the steam and the product. Moreover, Heat sources like flue gas, steam, thermal oil, and natural gas can provide the necessary energy for the dryer. Afterward, once the product dries, a cyclone separates it from the steam, which is recirculated. Next, A portion of the dried product is recirculated back to the mixer and combined with wet product before re-entering the dryer. s the water in the wet product evaporates into steam, it is released through a pressure control valve to maintain constant pressure. Finally,excess steam can be reused to power other processes on-site. On average, the product completes its drying process in 10-20 seconds.

This collaboration is representing a major leap forward in agricultural waste management. In other words, Agricultura y Conservas S.A. has secured a contract for the Exergy Superheated Steam Dryer, a cutting-edge technology. The project is set to transform citrus peel, previously seen as waste, into valuable animal feed.
The project, scheduled to unfold over the next year, will see the delivery of the Exergy Superheated Steam Dryer set for July 2021. Thereby initiating an an innovative project that will shift citrus peel from a financial burden to a profitable. By employing the Exergy Superheated Steam Dryer, Agricultura y Conservas S.A. will enhance the value of citrus peel. And in addition, the technology will also significantly improve energy efficiency. The Exergy Superheated Steam Dryer is engineered to recover up to 95% of the energy used in the drying process. This high recovery rate optimizes efficiency, reducing both energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
We will repurpose the recovered energy as process steam for evaporators, which eliminates the need for external energy sources. This approach reinforces our commitment to sustainability.

Save Lives and Money using our superheated steam dryer

As we touched on in last month&#8217;s newsletter, with our superheated steam dryers there is no longer the need to worry about fires and explosions. Since we’re using superheated steam as the drying media, the atmosphere within our closed-loop system is oxygen-free, we displace all air containing the oxygen with steam thus no fires or explosions can take place within the dryer. Because of this, our dryers don’t require any ATEX 94/9/EC certification which drastically lowers the client’s insurance premiums. There is no need for spark detectors, sprinklers, and other costly preventative systems.Not only is this one less thing to worry about, but it also creates a safer workplace for the workers. To this day we haven&#8217;t had a single reported fire or explosion incident in our steam dryers, where the oldest one was built in 1979.Another benefit is that there’s also no emissions, which means that there’s no need for an RTO or bag filters, which in turn also saves money.

Dr. Cloney is hosting a weekly podcast on the subject and we’re scheduled to be on the podcast discussing how to prevent dryer fires and explosions using superheated steam. It should be a very interested one, especially if you’d like to learn more about how our dryers are completely fire and explosion-proof. We will keep you posted once the episode gets published.

An upcoming article in BioEnergy International

In February we had a visit from Alan Sherrard Editor-in-Cheif at Bionengery International who was interested in writing an article about our company and technology. We performed an interview at our office in Gothenburg. The article should be out shortly, and we will keep you posted once it’s out.

Swedish Exergy has yet again been awarded Bisnode&#8217;s highest credit rating AAA. This is something we work very hard for every year and are very proud to have been able to achieve this again. Only about 3% of the companies in Sweden have the AAA rating and we’re one of them!

Exergy evaporator at stena recycling

Swedish Exergy visited Stena Recycling in Trollhättan, Sweden to see the Exergy forced recirculation evaporator that was delivered to then Volvo Aerospace in 1995.
The evaporator is still in use today and performing exceptionally well says the client. Apart from small valves and instrument changes no major changes have been made to the evaporator since installation.
One of Swedish Exergy’s unique selling points is that the evaporator can run much longer than other evaporators available on the market before cleaning is required. Stena confirms this by saying that they clean their evaporator only every 2nd year, this is due to a mandatory inspection otherwise they expect the evaporator to run longer than 2 years prior to cleaning being required.
